Summary of Position:

The Associate Director, Project Management (ADPM) is responsible for directly managing a group of Project Managers and providing consistent support and management to the Project Management team with the Director, Project Management. Additionally, the ADPM is responsible for overall quality assurance of Build It With KaBOOM! (BIWK) projects and providing administrative support to builds, which includes being the designated Point of Contact for the Project (POP) and supporting Project Managers to successfully plan and implement the highest quality projects. The ADPM will also focus on the continual assessment and improvement of the product delivery model through the identification of best practices. On occasion, the ADPM leads BIWK projects and acts as a Second in the field. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Manage a group of Project Managers to promote high quality execution of BIWK Projects:

  • Develop and implement initial and ongoing training for Project Managers to ensure continual quality improvement and to enhance functional and organizational skills; track individual and team progress towards established goals
  • Coach and mentor Project Managers and provide support across all aspects of the project
  • The team is constantly traveling and is based in multiple cities across the US, so experience and comfort in "remote management' is critical
  • Actively cultivate an inclusive work environment that contributes to the achievement of the organization's diversity and inclusion goals and cultural competencies including, but not limited to, the areas of recruitment, retention, and training and development

2. Assist Director, Project Management in general oversight of Project Management Team:

  • Understand and support the mission of KaBOOM! and how it is achieved through the BIWK projects led by Project Managers
  • Learn what makes a high quality project and provide guidance, support and direction as needed to ensure that optimal quality is met
  • Follow up and follow through with administrative work that supports the management of the team
  • Assist with keeping procedures and processes current and relevant
  • Conduct analysis of challenges and problems that occur to minimize the same challenges from reoccurring
  • Collaborate with ADPM team to schedule and train Seconds
  • Assist with managing the Build Calendar and scheduling Project Managers

3. Perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to:

  • Successfully lead KaBOOM! community-build playground projects and effectively serve as a Second in the field on BIWK projects
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing, and readying Associate Project Manager candidates and collaborate with Senior Project Managers to assist in the hiring and management of interns
  • Participate in the planning of the annual Project Management retreat, contributing to the structure, agenda, goals, etc. Manage and facilitate any other relevant trainings, as necessary and in coordination with the Director, Project Management
  • Assist with tri-annual process to select KaBOOM! vendors (Partners in Play) and generally support the maintenance of these partnerships in collaboration with the VP, Community Impact
  • Assist with office management and resource management (e.g. Design Day and Build Day collateral, apparel) to ensure adequate resources for the Project Management team


  • 5 years of project management experience and 3 years of people management experience, preferably at a non-profit or national service organization
  • Bachelor's degree strongly desired; graduate degree or certificate in a relevant discipline is a plus
  • Possess the skills necessary to prioritize, multi-task and thrive in a culture of rapid change (learn quickly from multiple sources; possess well-developed analytical, planning, organization, and problem solving skills)

Essential Functions: 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential function of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 

The employee must have the ability to maintain acceptable standards of office conduct, along with the ability to handle stress, get along with others, and work in a cooperative and team-oriented manner. The employee must have computer skills and the ability to type on a computer. Office days may involve sitting at a desk, using a computer or phone for 10-12 hours. Other job tasks will require movement around the office.

When working in the field, up to 40% travel is required across North America (to include weekends). The employee will be required to lift up to 50lbs and to reach above head, holding pieces of playground equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Similarly, the employee must be able to bend down, walk on uneven surfacing, and operate a wheelbarrow containing up to 200 pounds. The employee may use a shovel to scoop and lift mulch onto a tarp, then carry the tarp filled with mulch (weighing up to 40 pounds) a distance of up to 200 feet. This process may be repeated multiple times for up to 6 hours. The employee will need motor skills to operate tools, such as hammers, wrenches, ratchets, drills, shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, post hole diggers, and allen keys. Some Build Days and preparation for Build Days may entail being on one's feet for 15 hours. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions (rain or shine) on sites with much moving construction equipment and potentially loud noises.
