KaBOOM! is the national non-profit dedicated to giving all kids especially those living in poverty the childhood they deserve through great, safe places to play. KaBOOM! inspires communities to make play the easy choice and works to drive the national discussion about the importance of PLAYces. KaBOOM! has collaborated with partners to build or restore more than 17,000 playspaces, engaged more than 1.5 million volunteers and served over 9 million kids.

TITLE: Design and UX Intern

DEPARTMENT: Digital Engagement (External Affairs) 



LOCATION: Washington, DC

STIPEND: $500 total



KaBOOM! is looking for a college student, recent college graduate or graduate student to join our dynamic Digital Engagement team. The Digital Engagement team is responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of the organization's web applications as well as communications design and content development for the organization at large.

  • Using our CMS, create and update public-facing web content with HTML and CSS
  • Use analytics data to develop recommendations for improving content and enhancing user experience
  • QA web pages for SEO considerations
  • Participate in an agile development process and contribute to daily scrum meetings
  • Develop skills in HTML, CSS and Git



  • A matriculating college student who has earned enough credits for a sophomore status, or a student who has graduated from college within the preceding six months.
  • Area of academic study relates to the intern opening (Design, Product Design, UX, Front-End Engineering, etc.) strongly preferred
  • Ability to work in Washington, D.C. KaBOOM! office
  • Ability to work between 35-40 hours per week.
  • Ability to work a minimum of 8 weeks May through August 2018
  • Ability to secure their own lodging/housing
  • Adhere to all KaBOOM! employment policies



  • Proficiency in HTML and CSS
  • Experience with metadata and SEO
  • Experience with text editors and command line interfaces
  • Ability to read and draw conclusions from data
  • Ability to distill complex information into a concise format
  • Familiarity with Git/Github/version control
  • Ability to optimize images and other assets for the web
  • Bonus: Experience with Bootstrap, JavaScript or Ruby on Rails
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent organizational skills and great initiative
  • Effective at managing responsibilities and meeting deadlines
  • Ability to communicate with team members and business partners of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels
  • Willingness to engage in productive and challenging work
  • Openness and receptiveness to feedback and learning opportunities
  • Interns will conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times, including working in a cooperative manner within a team oriented environment
